FIRST MEETING OF THE AZERBAIJAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE ON UNESCO WORLD MEMORY PROGRAM HELD
On February 3, the first meeting of the Azerbaijan National Committee for UNESCO World Memory Program was held at the Institute of Manuscripts named after Muhammad Fuzuli of ANAS. Opening the event, chairman of the committee, director of the institute academician Teymur Karimli said that great leader Heydar Aliyev had special merits in establishing and developing relations between Azerbaijan and UNESCO and celebration of 600th anniversary of Imadaddin Nasimi in 1973 at the initiative of the national leader by UNESCO level. Academician T.Karimli brought to mind that, National Committee of Azerbaijan has been established by decision of Presidium of ANAS due to provide protection and preservation of world-wide documents, manuscripts, libraries and archives and delivering for next generations. He noted that one of the main functions of the committee is to submit proposals for the inclusion of Azerbaijan's document legacy in the UNESCO International Memory Register. He reminded that at present 16 Azerbaijan's tangible and intangible cultural heritage is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Then, the Foreign Ministry's Special Envoy, UNESCO Secretary-General Elnur Sultanov made a report on the future direction of the Azerbaijan National Committee on World Memory Program. Sultanov said that the policy of strengthening Azerbaijan-UNESCO relations was successfully implemented by President Ilham Aliyev. He also stressed out the exceptional services of the First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva in expanding cooperation between the organization and our country. Informing about the UNESCO World Memory Program, E. Sultanov said that the “Medieval medicine and Pharmaceutical Manuscripts” submitted by from Azerbaijan in 2005 and Mohammad Fuzuli's Divan manuscript in 2017 were included in the International Memory Registry. E. Sultanov then responded numerous questions of the participants. Members of the committee - academicians Nargiz Akhundova, Naila Valikhanli, Yagub Mahmudov, Ph.D. in medicine Leyla Imanova, Ph.D. in technical sciences Rashid Alakbarov and others spoke at the meeting. In the end, it was decided to prepare an action plan for the future activities of the National Committee.
